Let There Be Light Bulbs!
What will our world be without light bulbs? Of course we can use candles to give us light but there’s nothing like the convenience of just a flip of a switch to illuminate our houses, offices and streets.
Technological advances have enabled leading manufacturers like GE, Philips and Sylvania to produce many types of light bulbs which are much better than the traditional incandescent light.
Let’s have a look at some of these types. Since it produces less heat, a fluorescent bulb is much more efficient than an incandecent bulb. Being able to produce between 50 and 100 lumens per watt, fluorescent bulbs are four to six times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. A 15-watt fluorescent bulb provides the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb.
The energy saving compact fluorescent light bulbs not just lower your electricty bills but also helps in lessening global warming. It is said that if every household replace just three 60-watt incandescent bulbs with the energy efficient ones, the pollution savings is equivalent to 3.5 million cars off the road. Another type of light bulb is what is called the full spectrum which imitates the quality of natural light. This light is seen by the human eye as a bluish white tint. It is specially beneficial for people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Syndrome (SAD) and useful for improving mood and motivation. A black light bulb which is also known as ultraviolet or UV light gives off light in the blue, violet and ultraviolet wave spectrum. When you turn such lights on, they make white things glow in the dark. They usually provide a sufficient amount of light in a room while still keeping it dark. And of course, we won’t forget those merry merry Christmas lights. The traditional filament light bulbs are now being replaced by energy-saving light-emitting-diode (LED) Christmas lights. The LED lights are excellent energy savers, using less than 10% of the electricity consumed by filament bulbs. Consequently, you can save close to 95% on your electricity bill. These lights also stay cooler than traditional lights hence, they are safe to hang next to your Christmas tree ornaments. When it comes to light bulbs used by cars, there are the standard halogen bulbs. Some people, however, prefer to use the High Intensity Discharge (HID) light bulbs because they provide a brighter, whiter lights, enabling drivers to see clearer and farther.
